Role Purpose
  • To lead, plan, manage and support the End-to-End delivery (Germplasm Development, seeds development operations & Trialing) of Seeds Development objectives and provide sound leadership and support to sustain and further grow our market leadership position by providing best in class seed products to our customers in Indonesia
  • To effectively manage the delivery of SD strategy in the development of highly engaged and high performance SD team that regulary superior and profitable hybrids as define in the target product profile
  • Co-develop, define & manage the Seeds Development Strategy and implementation for Indonesia corn breeding program in particular and also support APAC corn breeding programs in general
  • Ensure strong functional connection and coordination between various SD functions within country, such as GD, Discovery Breeding, PPP, Operations, Trialing, Traits Development and other regional / global functions in delivering a safe, sustainable, reliable and efficient product delivery and operations
  • Ensure that Syngenta Seeds Development Units exploits its R&D global breeding strength and global technology breadth to deliver a pipeline of new and innovative products for Syngenta in support of our short and long term objectives
  • Co-develop and support the Seeds strategy in the region to ensure optimum cross crop learning
  • Translate the business strategy for Corn into development priorities and participate actively in the Country Seeds Business Leadership Team
  • Cultivate synergies with functions that help translate development advancements into successful commercial products (P&S; commercial)
  • Develop a high performance development team to foster collaborations across regions to manage germplasm as a global asset to maximize value and genetic gain
  • Overseeing the corn seed development programs in Indonesia by working very closely with relevant Germplasm teams across the globe, Seed Operations, Discovery Breeding, AGS (Applied Genetics Scientist), Trait Development, and PPP teams to manage product development activities relative to specific Indonesia TPPs for Corn, including:
  • Lead in designing, planning and implementing breeding projects that lead to the development of superior lines and hybrids that satisfies the TPP for Corn
  • Champion the use of the modern breeding methods along with Analytics and Data science to increase genetic gain
  • Plan breeding project crosses and associated testing including use of tester(s)
  • Regularly update and communicate early development hybrids, best line list, strengths/weaknesses of lines and other pipeline statistics such as number of hybrids in each stage, number of plots, etc.
  • Lead the advancements and ensure data driven decision making
  • Measure and monitor key performance indicator relative to pipeline performance and program efficiency. Leverage performance metrics and benchmarking to work towards maximum efficiency of germplasm improvement (genetic gain)
  • Ensure appropriate technology integration in germplasm improvement projects and product development processes.
  • Plan, evaluate and implement where appropriate marker-assisted breeding (MAB), DH and other breeding tools
  • Participate in global sharing of information on breeding protocol improvement
  • Lead and manage the SD operations and trialing organization to implement best in class operations and trialing that is aligned to Operations of Future
  • Plan and implement innovative field and laboratory initiatives, including mechanization, automation and other capital projects that will enable an effective product evaluations and improvement of data quality to be used for product advancement decisions
  • Responsible for building Indonesia’s Opex and Capex plans ( including budgets and 5 year plans) in close collaboration with Regional PPP team
  • Ensure that all the SD stations operate in compliance with COC, HSE and company policies
  • Communicate and support actions required from various local and global teams and monitor follow-up
  • Monitor and calculate program indicators to measure performance of operations activities
  • Lead the country seed operation for effective and efficient work slate implementation aligning with Regional and global priorities
  • Lead Sustainability and Business improvement initiatives in Indonesia

You will bring the following essential knowledge & experience:

Critical Knowledge
  • A thorough knowledge of breeding theory (genetics, statistics, genetic gain theory, and field plot technique), relevant germplasm and a very strong knowledge of Genome Wide Selection and marker applications to breeding
  • Ph.D. or Masters /or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated commercial breeding success
  • Knowlegde on portfolio management is an advantage
  • Analytical and strategic thinking skills
  • A high level of commercial acumen to allow effective interaction with business partners
  • Clear decision-making in the face of conflicting priorities
  • Strong influencing skills to lead and mobilise action without direct authority
  • Good communication skills and ability to operate across cultures and geographies, and across businesses where there are few established processes to get things done

Critical Experience
  • Demonstrated experience of at least 15 years as a successful breeder/breeding lead is highly desirable

  • Experience of complex technical portfolio/project management within the company, with good cross functional collaboration capability
  • Experience in operating independently in a complex matrix environment
